Despite decades of tremendous efforts, cancer is still one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide. The use of imaging technique to detect cancers at an early stage and to achieve image-guided cancer therapy provides better opportunities for patients to obtain more effective treatment with fewer side effects. To date, photoacoustic imaging (PAI) is the fastest-growing area of biomedical imaging technologies, which enables anatomical, functional and molecular imaging of biological tissues with high resolution, high contrast and satisfactory penetration depth. More importantly, nanostructures integrating PAI-based cancer theranostics have been widely developed since they have the potential to be used for personalized medicine.
It is expected that the combination of multifunctional nanoprobes with PAI is able to offer high-sensitivity cancer detection and imaging-guided cancer treatment with high efficacy.
The topics for this special issue include but are not limited to:
Development of multifunctional nanoparticles for PAI and photoacoustic-based multimodal imaging for cancer detection.
Development of organic/inorganic nanoprobes or small-molecular probes for PAI-guided cancer treatment such as photodynamic and photothermal therapy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy and others.
Development of multifunctional nanoprobes for PAI-guided drug/gene delivery or tumor microenvironments monitoring.
