Call for Papers

Special issue on Fluorescence lifetime imaging and its biomedical applications

Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) has been widely used in biomedical research and other fields. FLIM is the combination of fluorescence lifetime measurement and fluorescence microscopy. Since fluorescence lifetime is not affected by the probe concentration, excitation intensity and photobleaching, FLIM has many advantages, such as high specificity, high sensitivity, the capability of quantitative measurement in monitoring microenvironment changes and reflecting the intermolecular interactions. Despite decades of technical development, FLIM still faces some challenges in practical applications. For example, the resolution of FLIM is limited by the diffraction of light. In FLIM implementation, we often have to make trade-offs among imaging speed, image quality and lifetime accuracy. In the past decade, there have been rapid developments in optical technology hardware and software, material science and biology, which collectively led to a great advancement in FLIM technology and its applications. This special issue calls for the experts in the field of fluorescence lifetime imaging and its biomedical applications to discuss the most recent breakthroughs and their potential impacts in various research fields. Original research papers and review articles are both welcome. Manuscripts will be internationally peer-reviewed. Topics we specifically seek to cover include but are not limited to the following:

  • technology development of fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy

  • novel methods for FLIM data analysis and visualization

  • time-resolved fluorescence and phosphorescence imaging technologies

  • biomedical applications of FLIM in areas such as cellular microenvironment measurement, fundamental questions in life sciences, drug therapy monitoring
